(below)         September 2004 will mark Pierogi's 10-year anniversary. We will celebrate this decade-long adventure by holding a raucous racing event and exhibition. We invite you to participate in the September exhibition by making a pine wood derby racing car. All cars will be displayed in the gallery on rows of shelves throughout the exhibition, with off-site races held toward the end of the show. There will be three days of racing culminating in the announcement of awards for categories including speed, aesthetics, et cetera. Trophies will be awarded and commemorative T-shirts will be available. The competition is open to all artists. Competitors may also include patrons and critics who have been involved over the years, or who would like to be involved in the coming years, and others. Three days of racing will take place at Supreme Trading, one block from Pierogi, on North 8th Street. The track will be approximately 60 feet long, with a gradual slope from ten feet high descending to ground level. The cars will run powered by gravity alone, as is the tradition of pine wood derby racing. Announcers will call the races, cameras will be in place for photo finishes and race tallies will be tabulated on blackboards. There will be bleachers, banners, bar and excitement for all! The pine wood derby car kit consists of one six-by-two-by-three-inch block of wood, two axles, four wheels, along with rules and instructions. Kits will be available beginning June 1st at Pierogi for a fee of $4 (which covers the cost of the kit). (We will organize several pick up locations in Manhattan as well, later in the month.) Kits are also available at your local cub / boy scout supply shop (one of these shops is located in the Empire State Building). There will be sign up sheets and other information available at these locations. Please be sure to leave an e-mail contact on the sign up sheet as all further communication will be via e-mail. (If you are truly a luddite we may make special arrangements.) Specific details of the races will be announced later.
