artist statement
I still watch a lot of movies
and soap operas. I love the language. It takes the familiar to exaggerated
heights. Plunging necklines, clinging sweaters, people reACTing, country
kitchens and opulent bedrooms. Family, sex, family, betrayal, devotion,
revenge, illness, family, twins, amnesia, family, death with no body recovered,
return from the "dead," family. I love melodrama.
In "Some Men" I watched
movies that were made for male audiences (Westerns, war movies, science
fiction, crime drama). In this drawing I drew men and thier worlds as
depicted in these films. Their language is different, but just as exaggerated.
And I look at my own world
that is usually inside and is both comforting and claustrophobic. I draw
my bed in bed, my kitchen table at the table, a Cape Cod vacation cottage,
French doors in France.
