press release

Pierogi is delighted to present the second one-person show of New York artist Dan Devine. Devine's sculptural work to date has focused on the inversion of objects and space–turning ordinary objects such as sneakers, televisions, and even a car inside out, as well as casting negative and interior spaces. Devine's new work explores this idea of interiors from another perspective, that of surveillance– the surreptitious, real-time recording of room interiors and the occupants of those rooms. Joseph Masheck writes

Sensitivity is definitely these works' strong suit, as we pick up on their picking up on us–they having been leering at us all the while from some odd angle we did not suspect.

For this exhibition tiny video cameras and mini LCD monitors are suspended discreetly amongst the dangling glitter and detritus of metal hardware and crystals, among other materials, which one approaches unsuspectingly. The camera records the viewer staring into the piece and simultaneously projects their image onto the tiny monitor.

Devine, who has long negotiated inside / outside inversions, now objectifies spectatorial self-consciousness inside a subjectified object made of real stuff in real space. ...[C]ritical consciousness is reinforced here by any frisson of embarrassment, vis-à-vis the sculptural object, as we peep in, or is it out, on ourselves: hey, this is me! (Masheck, ÒInterioritesÓ)
