press release
Pierogi is also pleased to
present new work by Sermin Kardestuncer. KardestuncerÕs work is developed
on a personal scale from a subjective point of view; she works primarily
on her instincts. Drawn to her inner self, she has been thinking about
and redefining her Turkish heritage, searching for logic in chance and
trying to understand the rhythm in the way things happen.
Since her exhibition at Pierogi,
two years ago, Kardestuncer has expanded her mediumÑher use of thread,
for example. Besides stitching and knotting it, she is now exploring the
next logical disciplineÑknitting and crochetingÑsometimes capturing objects,
such as clay balls, inside the stitches. In the past Kardestuncer has
stitched directly into walls, as well as imbedded clays balls into the
wall surface.
Kardestuncer has been using
thread in her work since the early 90Õs. What attracts her to thread is
its limitless availability. The cotton thread is in some cases colored,
coated with bees wax, or left natural in order to meet the demands of
the surface and color. The nylon thread is painted with ink in increments
to show the gradual transition from black to white. For Kardestuncer,
the making of these sculptures,
which I call nonsensical things, is as much about progression and regression
as it is about the natural order and disorder of things.
In this exhibition Kardestuncer
will introduce video documentation to her work, where the knitted thread
is seen continuously unraveling. Also included in the show will be works
on paper.
