Enthusiasm is a multi-media,
three-monitor presentation whose centerpiece is seventy-five minutes of
videotape consisting of short video works, (some of which were produced
as a member of the Four Walls Slide and Film Club). Kimball uses repetition,
digression, and (often self-deprecating) humor and pathos to establish
an unsettling relationship to the viewer via the subject matter. In the
videos Kimball performs alone before a stationary camera in the tight
quarters of his New York apartment amidst a chaotic plethora of his creations.
The installation consists of hanging objects, drawings, paintings and
photo-based works that relate either directly or conceptually to the videos.
The gallery will become an extension of KimballÕs fabricated world mimicking
aspects of his environments. Think color.
My background was in painting,
now my paintings are my backgrounds.
Backgrounds for his videos
that is. Kimball began his art career as a painter, after receiving his
B.A. from Western Illinois University and attending U.C. San Diego. In
1983 he moved to New York and by 1996 was working primarily in video.
In this show he has invited all of his influences to bear and in doing
so has developed a potent, intrinsic ÒKimboleanÓ illogic which makes complete
sense.
