Pierogi is delighted to present
the second solo exhibition of New York artist, Kim Kimball. According
to Kimball, "Art, like sex, is meant to quicken the pulse."
In this new exhibition Kimball continues his curious blending of painting,
sculpture and video in an installation format. Here he uses white as a
leitmotif in a set of paintings, a group of sculptures, a collection of
Jokers, and a seminal video. This multi-media concoction adds up to a
discernible and sensible wholesensible in Kimball's world, that
is.
The exhibition is generated
by an idea and begins with a symbol of an idea: literally, a light bulb.
Magic works with sleight of hand. Kimball works with sleight of idea.
But this installation does not end with an idea. The objects themselves
are visually engaging elements of collections. The act of collecting being
an aesthetic that the artist takes and applies to objects in the real
world. Each collection being a different expression of the same thing.
As Rugoff reminds us regarding the Smiths, "art is a game in which
we can make up the rules."
In life, propagation
starts with a seed; in art, an idea. Kimball
Kimball's works similarly
engage fragmentation, repetition and mimicry and in their own way explore
issues of perception and subjectivity. Jane Harris
