We are pleased to
present an off beat collection of very talented artists from the San Francisco
Bay Area, sometimes grouped as a school but often shunning the confines
of such marketing practices. All of the artists included have strong ties
of community to the Bay Area, but they represent an array of positions
in terms of the length of time and degree to which they have been established
in the area, as well as in terms of their associations and practices.
A conversation about the nature of regional scenes was the initial impetus
for having a show of San Francisco based artists here in Leipzig. All
of us involved in the Pierogi Leipzig project have links to northern California
and the San Francisco region. Pierogi itself is a product of the burgeoning
Williamsburg art scene, a pronounced alternative to New York's Chelsea
arts complex. Pierogi is currently participating in another regional scene
even further removed from Manhattan, that of post-GDR Leipzig which presented
itself as an interesting correlation to Williamsburg. There has been a
lot of attention, of late, given to Leipzig's hothouse atmosphere producing
first the Leipzig school and then the new Leipzig school.
This show, then, is an opportunity to bring artists from one pocket of
alternative culture production to another. With Pierogi the perennial
alternative space as the conduit.
The title Euphorion comes from Goethe's Faust, a story about an even earlier
Leipziger. Euphorion is an Icarus type character who got a little too
hot for his own good, mirroring the double-edged nature of the art world
and marketing mechanisms in general.

Wir freuen uns, Ihnen
die außergewöhnliche Sammlung einer Gruppe sehr talentierter
Künstler aus der Bay Area San Franciscos vorstellen zu dürfen,
die oft als eine Schule bezeichnet werden, obwohl die Künstler gerne
die Beschränkungen dieser Vermarktungsmethode meiden. Alle Mitglieder
haben starke, gemeinschaftliche Beziehungen zur Bay Area, dennoch sind
die einzelnen Künstler unterschiedlich lange und tief in der örtlichen
Szene verwurzelt und nutzen für ihre Arbeit verschiedenste Assoziierungen
und Methoden.
Der Auslöser für die Idee, eine Ausstellung von Künstlern
aus der Umgebung San Franciscos in Leipzig organisieren zu wollen, war
ein Gespräch über den Charakter regionaler Kunstszenen. Wir
alle, die Mitarbeiter von Pierogi Leipzig, haben Verbindungen zu Nordkalifornien
und die Region um San Francisco. Pierogi selbst ist ein Produkt der aufkeimenden
Kunstszene des New Yorker Stadtteils Williamsburg, die eine ausgesprochene
Alternative zu New Yorks herkömmlichem Kunstkomplex Chelsea darstellt.
Momentan ist Pierogi Bestandteil einer regionalen Szene, die von Manhattan
wohl kaum weiter entfernt sein könnte. Dabei handelt es sich um das
Nachwende-Leipzig, das interessante Parallelen zu Williamsburg aufweist.
Der kreativen Atmosphäre Leipzigs, die zuerst die Leipziger Schule
und später die Neue Leipziger Schule hervorbrachte, wurde in der
letzten Zeit viel Aufmerksamkeit gezollt.
Daher bietet diese Ausstellung den Künstlern der einen alternativen
Kulturproduktionsstätte die Gelegenheit auf Kollegen einer anderen
Szene zu treffen. Pierogi, der beständige alternative Kunstraum,
dient dabei als Medium.
Der Titel der Ausstellung „Euphorion” entstammt der Geschichte
eines viel älteren Leipzigers, nämlich Goethes Faust. Euphorion
ist darin eine Ikarus-ähnliche Figur, die das zweischneidige Naturell
der Vermarktungsmechanismen im Allgemeinen und der Kunstwelt im Besonderen
verkörpert, und die schließlich, durch ihren übermütigen
Leichtsinn, ihr Ende besiegelt.
