Press Release
Carey Maxon's works on paper
give form to the chaotic rhythms and structure of her daily environment.
She explores her own experience of global events, personal relationships,
and physical surroundings through the creation of images that vibrate
with subjectivity. Expansive sweeps, overlapping angles and delicate investigation
of form occupy Maxon's compositions. In L'Ombre de Mon Ombre (Shadow of
My Shadow), all this activity converges in a central density that seems
to rest precariously between unraveling and regenerating. Maxon writes
I suspect my work appears
as evidence of a life that is quite chaotic. There is obsessive repetition
and faltering but decisive gesture. There are mistakes, miss-turns, and
silliness. The pieces are filled with refusals, anger, humility, and insistence
on shapes. (2006)
Maxon’s work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum
of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and The Museum of Modern Art (New
York).
