press release Pierogi is also very pleased to present the first one-person, New York exhibition of Swedish artist, Johan Nobell. Nobell's paintings depict surreal, apocalyptic landscapes with wry and witty imagery. Utilizing vivid colors, Nobell pulls one into his seemingly definable narratives. Upon closer inspection exactly what is going on is less easily determined. Through his hyper-real, quasi-cartoon rendering technique, the most seemingly nondescript objects take on an iconographic quality. Each chaotic element becomes essential. In several works, every loose object in the environmentwhat appear to be logs, stumps, clumps of grass, etc.is pushed into a chaotic, towering pile and lit with a giant match: A kind of burning cartoon pyre. Other scenes are more desolate or cryptic, where foregrounds and backgrounds interact with an occasional reference to a horizon or a sprouting florescence. These are also landscapes where a human presence is referred to but never seen. Nobell graduated from Valand, Gothenburg in 1994. He participated in the New York, International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in 2001, and has recently exhibited his work in Denmark and Sweden. He currently lives in Stockholm.
