press release
Pierogi is delighted
to present new work by Marilla Palmer. Palmer's work has been exhibited
in the US and Europe, including solo shows in New York and Los Angeles.
In the past she has furthered the tradition of painting by exploring the
delicate and diaphanous nature of fabrics using non-painting techniques
such as stitching, embroidery and beading. More recently, she has continued
this exploration to make sculptural "paintings."
Marilla Palmer translates
color field painting into the sculptural realm, building layer upon
layer of textured, diaphanous, holographic, and iridescent fabric on...steel
armature[s]. ("ArtScene," Southern California)
In this show
she combines the strongest of these elements to develop a subtle narrative.
These sculptural works combine Warhol, psychedelia, and what are typically
considered "feminine" influences through Palmer's response to
the artifice of her suburban landscape. In her environment
there's a kind of urbanized
love of natural landscape going on, none of us have enough of it, we
do what we can. Behind the faux Bavarian shingle homes are backyard
paradises: a rose arbor supplemented with unnaturally colored plastic
flowers, pools way too big for the yard.... I use the tools of the faux
gardener and costumer: astro turf, sequins, clear plastic, artificial
flowers, as well as air movement, light, shadow, reflection.
In all of this
Palmer works toward exposing the sublime of the artificial and fanciful.
"I don't know where the artificial stops and the real starts...."
