BOB and ROBERTA SMITH present The Art Amnesty
Pierogi is extremely pleased
to present a second New York solo exhibition of British artists, Bob and
Roberta Smith. This time the Smiths offer a five-week Amnesty for Bad
Art. Theirs is a call to artists to Pack it In. Anyone who brings
in a piece of Bad Art and signs the cardI PROMISE NEVER TO MAKE
ART AGAINwill receive a special "I AM NO LONGER AN ARTIST"
badge. For those who arrive sans artwork, there will be materials
on site to create a "last drawing" which will then be displayed
in the gallery. For larger works there will be a dumpster on the street
in front of the gallery. Only artwork determined to be genuine artwork,
and genuinely bad, will be accepted for the dumpster. At the end of the
first week, one dumpster load will be disposed of.
The gallery installation will
also include colorful text banners with pithy quotes such as: "Artists
Ruin It for Everybody," "Vito Acconci Is a Wanker," "Henry
Moore Never Had an Original Idea," and "Valerie Solanis Had
the Right Idea."
The Art Amnesty is an attempt
to look at the motivations of artists. Why are some people artists while
others are not? Was Beuys an idiot? Do artists think they are cut above
the rest of us? The paradox being that the whole thing is about making
art.
While the SmithsÕ use
of language identifies them as heirs to conceptual art, they also draw
on the traditions of British empiricism and nonsense literature. Instead
of serving up abstruse philosophical propositions or abstract linguistic
games, their work is conspicuously unpretentious, sometimes appearing
deliberately silly. Yet underlying their use of absurdity is a constant
effort to puncture our quasi-religious faith in mainstream aesthetics
and to remind us that art is a game in which we can make up the rules.
