It's an amazing experience, to be on the center of a plane of ice, moving through the air at 10 - 20 miles per hour, spinning through the air and landing on the edge of a blade, maintaining the same speed. A salchow was one of the funnest jumps to do...a double salchow. I doubt I'll ever do it again in real life...I suppose that's what they call the Glory Days. Before getting into the "Glory Days," I'd like to say that Pierogi 2000 is pleased to present the first one person show of Lisa Stefanelli in New York, opening Friday, February 25, 2000. This show will consist of eight or nine paintings in different scale and intensity, all but one done with enamel on vellum (goat and calf skin). The largest painting is done with enamel on panel. Most of the paintings do connect with a common "edge." This edge is literal as well as figurative. This edge is still the same one that is quoted from Stefanelli's "Glory Days," only her glory days are here and now, within her painting. The edge she is painting has that same lyrical line that was cut into the ice when she was skating. I don't want to get too romantic about this influence, but it does play a large part in her composition and our comprehension of this group of work. Stefanelli's use of surface and line create a unique sense of the sublime, but you never feel satiated. You always want to see more. She's got the touch...and the moves. When you see the work you will quickly realize that her main color preference is red, not in all, but in most of the pieces. It does evoke a real sense of passion and intensity. Using a single dominant color creates clarity, or a constant, throughout the work not unlike, let's say, Robber Ryman with his white minimal paintings. This focus develops a strong and immediate dialog with the structure of Stefanelli's work, and in doing so gives us a visual ride we won't soon forget.
