Pierogi 2000: Flat Files,
part of Yerba Buena's new "Multiple Sensations: Series, Collections,
Obsessions" exhibit, is a delectable, treasure-filled treat for the
curiosity-inclined. In 1994 Joe Amrhein started the alternative space
Pierogi 2000 in Brooklyn as a response to the lack of opportunities for
artists working outside of the mainstream gallery system. Today the artist-run
project is one of the preeminent exhibition venues in the New York area.
As part of his inclusive, eclectic vision, Amrhein created "flat
files" as a means to display the work of some 600 sketchers, photographers,
painters, and text artists all at the same time. The collection at Center
for the Arts features more than 300 artists, including 34 from San Francisco,
who have been added to the mostly New York-based banquet of abundance.
The greatest pleasure here lies in the grazing. Viewers are invited to
intimately explore and handle the files at their leisure; I recommend
setting aside several hours to fully feast. I discovered Daniel Zeller's
delicately detailed, yet abstract, pencil drawings of tracheal organisms;
Chris Doyle's tiny watercolors of suburban homes isolated against
a sterile white background; Lori Ellison's obsessive peaks, pocks,
and dots of blue ballpoint on paper; Leonie Guyer's sensuous, seductive
ink drawings on silk; and Cherith Rose's paintings-on-paper that
explore the banality and desolation of industrial residue. Other San Franciscans
with works in the collection are Alicia McCarthy, Cliff
Hengst, Chris Johanson, Leona Christie, Jessica Snow,
Michael Damm, and Caitlin Mitchell-Dayton. The upstairs
Terrace Gallery features a body of larger works and video selections,
giving viewers a taste of some of the featured artists' media and scale
outside of the work represented in Amrhein's files.
