Jen Hitchings

Jen Hitchings - "Cheater," 2019, Oil on panel, 19.75 x 23.75 inches

Jen Hitchings’ recent work often incorporates text into surreal, post-apocalyptic landscapes. Fusing aspects of environmental collapse, solitude, and at times humor, she utilizes nature to convey her interests in psychology: the examination of others and self. The text, as in “Cheater,” is often slang, which serves to suggest several vantage points between the artist, artwork, and viewer. It can be the artist cursing the artwork while meticulously making it, the artwork cursing the artist seeing her for who she really is, or the artwork suggesting the viewer analyze their own flaws. The work acts as a mirror, as art often does.
